In September 2020, the de facto leaders of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region visited Moscow at the same time. The Kavkaz 2020 strategic command-staff exercises were held in the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation, including the occupied regions of Georgia. Russia will install an additional high-voltage cable to improve the energy system security in the Tskhinvali region. This article provides an overview of these aforementioned main events that took place in connection with the Kremlin’s policy in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region in August 2020.
A delegation of energy experts from Russia visited Abkhazia in August 2020 to overcome the impeding energy crises. Russia is assisting Abkhazia’s medical system because of its limited resources to fight the new coronavirus. In June 2020, summer period military exercises have started at the Russian military bases in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region, de facto Leaders of the occupied regions met with the President of Russia in Moscow, „Russia Day“ and the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War was celebrated in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region. The article provides an overview of the major events that took place in June 2020 in connection with the Kremlin policy in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region.
In May 2020, due to the new Coronavirus pandemic, traffic between Russia and the occupied regions of Georgia was restricted. Nevertheless, the newly elected „president“ of Abkhazia paid a visit to Moscow. The pandemic has affected all areas. Instead of military exercises, military personnel were engaged in disinfection. Events related to May 9 were also modestly carried out to prevent the spread of the disease. In April 2020, the new Coronavirus pandemic affected ongoing processes in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region. Due to the new Coronavirus spread threat, guests from Russia could not attend inauguration of the new „President“ of Abkhazia. Military exercises have not been suspended, however number of measures have been taken at the Russian military bases to fight the new Coronavirus. The article provides an overview of the major events that took place in April 2020 in connection with the Kremlin policy in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region.
Due to Coronavirus spread threat traffic between Russia and Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region has been suspended. For the same reason, „elections“ in Abkhazia were observed by Russian „embassy“ representatives only. De facto leader of the Tskhinvali Region, Anatoly Bibilov, met with the President of Russia. Curator to Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region Sergey Chebotarev has been appointed to a new position. Staff changes at the Russian government towards Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region started early 2020 continued in February as well. Starting from February 1, Abkhazia receives electricity from Russia. Textbooks of Russian language and literature were handed over to schools in Gali district. Russia will help Abkhazia to fight the Conoravirus. In January 2020, curators to Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region at the Russian Government and the Presidential Administration resigned. Rashid Nurgaliyev and Vladislav Surkov played key role in resolving political crisis in Abkhazia. In 2020, intensity of practical exercises at the 7th Russian military base in Abkhazia will be increased by 10%.
