The de facto Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia Meets Sergey Lavrov

On April 1, 2019, de facto Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia Daur Kove met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov. Among bilateral relationship main topics discussed on the meeting was also reviewed interaction within the frames of the Geneva International Discussions.

The Geneva Discussions are launched since 2008. The 47th round of the discussion is planned on April 2-3, 2019.

At the meeting Lavrov made several significant statements:

  • Coordination mechanism of foreign policy between Russia and Abkhazia is effective, which is based on the memorandum on implementation of coordinated foreign policy, signed in 2015.
  • Moscow will continue to strengthen Abkhazia's positions in the international arena.      
  • There is a solid contractual-legal basis for development of bilateral relations between Russia and Abkhazia, more than one hundred documents have been signed, are working successfully on implementation of the Alliance and Integration Agreement signed in 2014.
  • Joint actions for strengthening regional security are effective, including within the framework of the Geneva Discussions.
  • There is close cooperation between Abkhazia and Russia in socio-economic, humanitarian, military, military-technical and foreign policy fields. Socio-economic development of Abkhazia is the priority. The Investment Program, supporting socio-economic development of Abkhazia in 2017-2019, is being implemented successfully. Russia is the key partner to Abkhazia in foreign economic activity. Russian-Abkhazian regular business forums facilitate to develop relations in this field.

Dual citizenship issue was also discussed at the meeting

Kove  assessed the meeting as very productive and positive. Kove met Lavrov on November 2-4, 2016, in Moscow. Kove and Lavrov meeting was held on April 18-19, 2017, when Lavrov visited Sukhumi.
