As planned, up to 5,000 hectares of nut plantations will be chemically treated in Gali. According to a representative of the de facto Ministry of Agriculture, Vladimir Geria, the works are mainly carried out in the Gali district, which is rich in nuts.
Chemical treatment is aimed at eradicating the Asian bug and fungal diseases. According to Geria, due to these measures the number of Asian bugs decreased.
Asian bugs appeared on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia five years ago and widely spread. The insect mostly damages fruits and berries, as well as vegetables and grains.
In 2020, Russia allocated RUB 130 million in pest control assistance to Abkhazia. The de facto Republic also received assistance from international organizations. The de facto Ministry of Agriculture spent RUB 15 million only on the purchase of pesticides. In 2020, a total of 400 thousand tons of pesticides were used against the Asian bug.
