On May 21, 2019, Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation accepted agreement reached between de facto President of Abkhazia and the Opposition on postponing date of illegitimate presidential elections, stated political scientist Alexey Chesnakov - close associate to the Directorate for Cross-Border Cooperation. The Directorate is the curator to Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region.
On May 20, de facto President Raul Khajimba opposition gathered at the de facto parliament in Sukhumi, started mass protest rallies demanding to postpone illegitimate election date. The reason for the protest was the illness of one of the presidential candidates, former de-facto Minister of Security of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania. Bzhania supporters suspect he was poisoned. Currently Bzhania is treated in Moscow. The parties reached compromise on May 21, when Khajimba postponed election date to August 25 instead of July 21
