According to the de facto Security Service of Abkhazia, more than 300 citizens were detained for violation of de facto border with Georgia, the number is three times less than it was in 2017. According to the Service, significant reduction of violators number is caused by refined approach to the border protection issue by de facto Border Security Service of Abkhazia and Border Division of the Federal Security Service of Russian Federation which is deployed in Abkhazia.
According to the de facto Security Service of Abkhazia, criminal indictment was issued against 24 “violators“ for de facto border crossing and 7 were sentenced to administrative imprisonment. Most detainees were exposed to administrative responsibilities: more than 100 were fined, 12 were expelled from Abkhazia, preventive measures were applied against others.
On April 30, 2019, President of the Russian Federation, Dimitri Medvedev and the leaders of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region signed an agreement on “Joint Measures for Protecting State Borders between Russia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia”. Through the agreement, Russia accepted an obligation of protecting the borders of the occupied regions, including the maritime border.
