“Foreign Policy” of the Tskhinvali Region: Summary of 2021 Activities

The de facto Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Tskhinvali region summed up its activities in 2021. According to a representative of the “Ministry,” further development and deepening of relations with the region’s strategic partner, the Russian Federation, will be a priority for Tskhinvali. The “Ministry” singled out several important events of 2021.

Meeting Between Sergey Lavrov and Dmitry Medoev

In January and December 2021, the de facto Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Tskhinvali region, Dmitry Medoev, met with the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov. The meeting discussed relations between the de facto republic of Tskhinvali and Russia, foreign policy coordination and regional security.

During a meeting in Moscow on January 25, the Plan of Consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of South Ossetia and Russia for 2021-2022 was signed.

The next meeting was held in Sochi at the end of the year, on December 20. Special attention was paid to the discussion of security issues in the South Caucasus, among the topics of discussion was the cooperation between Georgia and the United States, against the background of the growing activity of NATO.

Important Agreements

In 2021, eight agreements were signed between the Tskhinvali region and Russia. On May 19, Dmitry Medoev and Russia’s “ambassador” to the Tskhinvali region, Marat Kulakhmetov, exchanged ratification certificates of the agreement between the de facto republic of Tskhinvali and the Russian Federation on mutual recognition of disability status of employees of the Ministries of Defense and Interior.

On September 20, the agreement on dual citizenship between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tskhinvali and Russia was signed at a solemn ceremony.

Relations with Syria

On May 29, on the third anniversary of the recognition of the de facto republic of Tskhinvali by the Syrian Arab Republic, 60 coniferous trees were planted in the Tskhinvali Culture and Recreation Park as a symbol of cooperation and friendship. The event was attended by Mr. Medoev and guests from Russia.

Conference

In October, the Tskhinvali Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Russian National Committee for Black Sea Economic Cooperation organized the South Ossetia at the Crossroads of Civilizations - Problems of Security and Sustainable Development International Conference.
