25th Anniversary of Peacekeeping Mission was Marked in Sukhumi

On June 21, 2019, at the monument of peacekeepers in Sukhumi, the 25th anniversary of the launch of peacekeeping mission in Sukhumi was marked. Peacekeeping mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States, represented by Russian Armed Forces, has been operating in Abkhazia since June 21, 1994.

Peacekeeping mission veterans, military servicemen of the Russian military base in Abkhazia, Raul Khajimba, de facto President of Abkhazia, and Aleksey Dvinianin, Russian “ambassador“ to Abkhazia, participated in the ceremonial event.

According to existing information 117 peacekeepers have been died during the peacekeeping mission in Abkhazia. Peacekeeping mission was stopped on September 1, 2008, after the Russian-Georgian war. Russian 7th military base in Abkhazia is the legal successor of the 131th single motorized brigade, which carried out peacekeeping mission on the territory of Abkhazia since June 21, 1994.
