Delegation of Russian MPs Visited Tskhinvali

2021 / 02 / 05

The Russian parliamentary delegation visited the Tskhinvali region. The delegation is chaired by Konstantin Kosachev, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federal Council. Members of the delegation are Krim Kazanakov, Oleg Seleznyov, and Kazbek Taisayev,

the Deputy Charman of the State Duma Committee on the CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots.

The purpose of the visit is to meet with members of the de facto parliament of the Tskhinvali region within the framework of the so-called standing commission on Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation. This was the first official visit during the pandemic. The Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation agreement was signed in September 2008.

The Russian delegation held meetings in the de facto parliament, which has not convened since November 2020, as some lawmakers are demanding the resignation of the de facto prosecutor general over the August assassination of a Tskhinvali resident, Inal Jabiev, by police. As the de facto President, Anatoly Bibilov, refuses to dismiss the prosecutor, 17 of the 34 deputies boycott parliamentary sessions. The deputies temporarily stopped the boycott to meet with the Russian delegation and 30 deputies attended the parliamentary session. It is noteworthy, that at the concluding briefing, Kosachev called on Ossetian MPs to resume work. During the working visit, the Russian delegation also met with Bibilov.
